When I had the arch bars removed, I was promised that my gums would bleed easily for the next two or three weeks, particularly when I flossed. The gums have recovered faster than I expected, though. They bled in about three places the first night of flossing and two places for a couple of nights thereafter. There was one spot that bled for a couple more nights, but by now the bleeding has stopped altogether.

I'm Adam Merberg. I wrote this blog after I had a bicycle accident and thought it might be useful to document the various injuries (a broken jaw among them) that resulted. If you have questions about anything you read here, feel free to email me. These days, I don't update this blog often because I consider myself to be fully recovered, but I do try to reply to comments and emails.
Please note that this blog is not a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment. If you have reason to believe that you have broken your jaw, you should see a doctor.

Thanks for your blog. I broke my lower jaw in 2 places on june 16th. Its nice to know what to expect from someone who has gone through it.
jay,
I’m sorry to hear about your injury, but I’m glad you find this blog useful.
I hope you’ll consider starting your own recovery blog. Your recovery will undoubtedly differ from mine in some ways, and others might benefit from reading about your experience. If you do decide to keep a blog, please be sure to send me the URL so I can add it to my blogroll. Also feel free to drop me an email (adam@shockandjaw.com) if you need advice on how to get started.
Best wishes for your recovery!
Adam
How long did you have the arch bars in your mouth before you removed it?
I had the arch bars for about 2 months total before they came off. That includes the 3 weeks when my mouth was wired shut. They weren’t actually doing anything the last couple of weeks, though. The oral surgeon just left them in case he were to decide I needed rubber bands again.

Thank you for sharing. As I had a fracture jaw in 3 places and just had my arch bar off. Wanted to know if my day after discomfort and swelling was normal.
